Start with the role, not the course name.
Write down who will attend, what they are expected to do and which learning outcomes your organisation requires. A receptionist, workplace first aider and clinician may need different training, even when they work in the same building.
If an employer, professional body or governing body requires a particular qualification, syllabus or assessment, include that requirement in your enquiry. A course with a similar name is not automatically an equivalent course.
Check what the course actually covers.
| Training focus | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| CPR | Who the course is for, the age groups covered and the opportunity for practical learning. |
| AED / defibrillator | How AED use is included and whether familiarisation with your own make and model can be discussed. |
| Basic life support (BLS) | The syllabus, intended audience and any assessment or evidence of competence required for staff roles. |
| First aid or specialist qualifications | The exact qualification, provider requirements, assessment and renewal arrangements. |
DST’s core CPR, AED and BLS course brings the three topics into a two-hour group session. It is separate from an Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work qualification. Paediatric, dental medical emergencies, sedation and other clinical requirements need a specific discussion before booking.
Agree the evidence your organisation needs.
The published core course includes certificates and individual AED/BLS booklets. Ask what the certificate records and whether it matches your organisation’s requirements. Attendance at a course should not be described as a regulated qualification or clinical competency unless the agreed course and assessment support that claim.
Where you need CPD documentation, an assessed competency or a particular renewal date, send those requirements before a booking is confirmed. Ask about the trainer’s relevant experience and qualifications for the agreed scope.
Make the session work for the whole group.
- Count attendees by location and shift, rather than only across the organisation.
- Allow the full session time and agree cover for colleagues who need to remain on duty.
- Choose a room with space for the group and practical activity.
- Discuss accessibility, communication needs and adjustments in advance.
- Share your AED make and model, if you have one, and an onsite contact.
For DST’s standard course, plan for up to 15 people per session. Use the group cost guide to understand the published price, or the multi-site enquiry for several locations.
